!The Corellian Engineering Corporation ---- Astute readers may have noticed that Chrome uses its own set of names and serial numbers for CEC vessels. The reason is simply that I find it unlikely that a company, even a long standing one, would manufacture products with such wildly differing naming conventions. I have spent a long time scowering through the 'official' lists of ships names and settled on a system which seemed to require the fewest changes, especially with regarding mainly changing rare ships, to create the consistant system. In essence the Chrome system assigns each Corellian ship a full name that consists of two letters, then four digits, then a brand name. !!The first letter designates the broad category to which the ship belongs. The following list is not exhaustive; !!!A - Assault / Attack Assault or Attack craft are generally military of paramilitary vessels designed to engage primarily ground based forces. !!!B - Bulk Transport Bulk Transports are amongst the largest of the cargo hauling vessels made by CEC. Certainly Star Freighters and Tankers do exist, many of them much larger than Bulk Transports, but CEC has also eschewed the largest types of ships, preferring the utility and freedom of smaller craft. Bulk haulers are mainly designed to move larger items in numbers, or sometimes quantities of dry products. !!!C - Capital Combat CEC have never been a major player in the field of combat vessels. Competition in that field is harsh and losing can be devastating to even large galactic corporations. However, as the primary supplier to several of the Core World's defence fleets, CEC do produce some smaller capital combat starships. !!!E - Endurance Endurance hauliers are intended to make long jumps, at least of sector duration and coming up to intra-galactic jumps. These ships aren't often very fast, but their ability to long jump often makes them more cost effective than shorter range vessels. !!!H - Heavy Transport Heavy transports are medium sized couriers designed to handle extra weight cargos, typically heavy machinery or super dense materials. !!!J - Light Load Haulers are ships designed to move non-internal cargoes, typically by latching on to cargo modules. Haulers by their nature tend to have variable field hyperdrives, allowing them to take their loads past lightspeed. Light Load Haulers can typically ferry several hundred tons of Cargo Pods. !!!K - Medium Load Haulers are ships designed to move non-internal cargoes, typically by latching on to cargo modules. Haulers by their nature tend to have variable field hyperdrives, allowing them to take their loads past lightspeed. Medium Load Haulers can typically ferry several thousand tons of Cargo Pods. !!!L - Logistics Logistic vessels are designed to support other vessels, typically capital ships, with fuel, technical assistance, dedicated systems, augmented sensors or other elements. !!!M - Medium Transport Medium transports fill the niche between yield couriers and the bulk freighters. !!!N - Heavy Load Haulers are ships designed to move non-internal cargoes, typically by latching on to cargo modules. Haulers by their nature tend to have variable field hyperdrives, allowing them to take their loads past lightspeed. Medium Load Haulers can typically ferry several million tons of Cargo Pods. !!!P - Passenger Fairly straightforward, passenger vessels are designed to move people from place to place, rather than cargo. !!!R - Recon Survey / Scout craft are amongst the most self reliant ships in the galaxy. Capable of making jumps through poorly documented or completely unknown areas of space, equipped with powerful sensors to analyse their targets. !!!S - Starship Star scale vessels are the largest ships in the galaxy, capable of galaxy wide jumps and extended operations on a galactic scale. !!!Y - Yield Yield Transports are small couriers designed to haul small cargoes short distances at speed. !!The second letter designates the specific type of ship. The following list is not exhaustive; !!!B - Battleship !!!C - Cruiser !!!D - Destroyer !!!F - Frigate !!!G - Gunship !!!H - Tanker !!!M - Hauler !!!R - Corvette !!!T - Transport !!!U - Utility !!!V - Carrier !!!X - Experimental !!!Z - Zybatzu !!The four digit number The four digit number is broken into two parts. The first two digits indicates the basic model number, and these are issued in a straight-forward linear fashion by CEC executives for each specific variety of ship. For example, a CEC ship labelled YT 13 will always be an older design than one labelled YT 14 or higher, but may be younger than an ST 10. The second digits indicate which variant of design the ship has. Low numbers show that the ship is a basic configuration, whilst higher numbers would indicate later designs, potentially with significant changes to layout and configuration. CEC also always issue a unique name for each design. These are picked by a design team and follow no particular formulae, as the BT-0210 'Beryl' would show, named as it was for the wife of then CEC President Hyram Spool. Many ships are colloquially referred to by part, or parts of their full name. The HT-0820 'Barloz' is almost universally known simply as the 'Barloz', for example, whilst the CR-0900 'Taiphen' is often listed as the CR-90.
